DOWRY SYSTEM "A curse to the Nepali society"
Related to country: Nepal

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Dowry has been a vicious problem to the Nepali society since ages. It
dates back to the time when man started living a civilized life.
Originally it was intended to provide support and security to the
newly married couples to initiate their marital lives. It also
signified an alternative to inheritance for women.

With the passing time, its ghastly face surfaced. Of late, parents
spend their entire life under debt to accumulate wealth to offer dowry
for their daughter's marriage; failing of which results in murders,
foul play or worst of it all suicide. Besides these entire factors the
women faces domestic violence on daily basis, leading to psychosocial,
mental and physical problems.

The patriarchal society has given men dominant standing, culturally
regarded as asset whilst women looked down and considered- liability.
Women in our society are exploited thus are ignorant of their rights.
But education has inspired women brace themselves to fight against the
social evil by organizing social and mental set-ups in the Nepali
society. The disparity between men and women must be scraped.

Aristotle remarks, "The development of a country depends on the
development of women." Until women are treated with dignity,
development of nation is unattainable.

Still many women have been burnt up,killed for the name of dowry.Their voice has been stopped before they can raise it up.
